The incident took place around 7:53 p.m. Sunday at the Majestic Movie Theatre at 118 Summer St., according to Stamford Police Capt. Diedrich Hohn.
When police arrived on the scene after receiving a call for people being threatened with guns, officers quickly determined that approximately five young people were in the front of the theater when several in the group appeared to be armed with handguns, Hohn said.
At that point, they ran inside and yelled: “Everyone get their hands up." They then discharged the guns, which were later determined to be cap guns, and then ran south on Summer Street, he added.
Officers began to canvass the area and discovered four of the suspects at Washington and Tresser Boulevard. All four were identified as juveniles and two cap guns were seized, Hohn said.
Another juvenile was detained in the proximity of the theatre with a backpack. In the vicinity of where he was stopped officers discovered another cap gun.
"Witnesses from the scene identified all five juveniles involved in this incident and they were all arrested and brought to the Stamford Police juvenile division for processing," he said.
All from Stamford, the three juveniles, ages 10 to 16, who fired the cap guns, were charged with reckless endangerment, breach of peace and conspiracy to commit reckless endangerment and breach of peace.
The two without guns were charged with breach and conspiracy to commit breach of peace, police said.
"Luckily in light of the rash of shootings going on this was more of a bad judgment call by five juveniles," Hohn said. "This incident could have had a more horrific outcome if a police officer or an armed civilian was in attendance at the theatre."
Hohn said the moviegoers were quite "shaken-up and caused a great deal of concern, Hohn said.
"The Stamford Police should be commended for their response and the safe arrest of all these juveniles involved," he added. "The patrons of the theatre should all commended for their cooperation with the investigation and willingness to come forward to make sure an event like this does not occur again."
